The candles produced when soy candle making are among the cleanest of all candles and the reason is that they produce little or no smoke. Theses candles are highly regarded within the United States because soy is grown in many different of parts of the country. Iowa and Indiana are two of the main producers of soy and these states are two of the largest users of soy candles.
Before you begin your soy candle making, you will need to get some supplies. The soy wax is first obviously. There are several manufacturers available to you and in each brand you can get totally different types of soy wax. Soy wax will not be as robust as paraffin. There are varieties of soy wax that differ in the amount of paraffin wax additives. If you're simply starting out you can get soy wax that is pretty inexpensive.
Before you start melting the soy wax military inspired candles you will want to get a double boiler. A double boiler is a two pot setup that is used to soften the wax by melting it. Each of the two pots are different in size. The smaller pot will hold the wax and it is placed in the bottom pot that will hold the water. The whole double boiler with water and wax will then be placed on the heat source.
The next thing you need are molds. Molds come in numerous shapes, sizes and different materials. To start off I recommend that you do not spend too much on the molds. Get a couple of aluminum ones as well. Aluminum will give you a very good finish and is inexpensive in comparison with silicon.
If you do not want to mess around with moulding your candles then just get jars. Jars are a very inexpensive option and will be sure to add a touch of personality to your candles. They cost less than traditional molds and the wax collected can be utilized again.
Obviously you will need to purchase the wicks and any fragrances, color dyes or additives to give your candles the scent you want. If you are using aluminum molds only then be sure you purchase a candle releaser to get the candle out of the mold.
This is essentially everything you need to get started with soy candle making.
